These sessions can be in studio or on location

I met Kristen a few weeks after my first son was born, just as things were shutting down during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. I was a new mom with no idea what was happening in the world. I called Kristen to explore options for newborn photos. I didn’t know what I was doing or what to expect. It was like Kristen was sent to provide a sense of security for us. Her professionalism and sense of calm allowed me to step back and just enjoy some precious moments as a new family. She provided not only photos, but a sense of peace and some precious memories. Four years later, she is still our family photographer. Recently, with our second child, we did more family photos. We checked in before the photos and I was anxious and unprepared. I didn’t think I could pull it together for us to have decent family photos. Once again, Kristen was calm that I needed. She assured me that no matter what, we were going to be getting important and beautiful moments for our family. And we did. I’m so glad that I came across Kristen’s page one day in the parking lot of our pediatrician, searching for a newborn photographer. At this stage, she knows our family so well that I am sure we not only have a photographer in her, but a friend. I highly recommend.

Kristen has now done senior photo packages for both of my kids. Kristen worked with us every step of the way to create a fantastic array of pictures: large portraits for our walls, small contrasting photos, gifts for grandparents, and announcement cards. Most importantly, she was able to capture the unique personalities of each kid, bathed in the golden light of the Flagstaff landscape in fall. This combination makes these pictures works of art. Each time I walk by the portraits on my wall, I feel the warmth of fall days and the spontaneity of our photo session with Kristen. I see my kids looking backwards, towards their childhood in Flagstaff, and forward, to the excitement of college and their future adult lives. Kristen captured this moment in time, and I will be forever grateful.

Kristen really sees you. Not just through the cameral lens but what attributes make you who you are. She has a sensitivity that creates an atmosphere of comfort, more than comfort- fun. Five stars aren't enough to convey the exceptional photos and customer service I have received. I have hired Kristen and Keiji for both corporate and personal photography needs. I have had pregnancy, newborn, family, and three unique sessions of senior photos done. It has taken me too long to write this, because we have twins who are now 2 years old. Kristen fit us in for newborn photos even though I didn’t plan ahead for them at all. I am forever grateful for those amazing photos. She was so patient, calm, and went above and beyond for us on multiple occasions to accommodate all my requests and ideas. I also really appreciated having the wall art, Christmas cards, and album made for us. There’s no way I would have done all that on my own until many years later. When is the best time to schedule newborn portraits?

We say this depends on the postpartum mom. Ideally, we love to do newborn portraits within the first two weeks.

However, if the mom is recovering or the family needs more time, anytime in the first couple of months is a great time for newborn photography.

How long does a newborn portrait session take?

We recommend you block out 2 hours for a newborn portrait session, so we allow time for you to feed or change the baby, sip your tea, and basically, not stress!

Plus, we may spend some time waiting for those cute, newborn cross-eyed faces to change. 🙂

Where should we do our newborn photos?

We recommend that you do newborn portraits in our cozy Flagstaff photo studio, with lots of comfort items, great lighting, comfortable sets, and ideal temperature.
We find that newborns outdoors are sometimes cold, and are visually dwarfed by the grand Flagstaff landscape features.

Can I bring my family to our newborn photography session or is it just the baby?

Please bring the family to your newborn photo session! Your baby will always have a record of how loved they were when they arrived.

Can you photoshop me to look 50 pounds lighter and 10 years younger?

I’m sorry, no. But I promise, you will have a photographer who will help you look your best with great lighting, flattering positions, and some smoothing Photoshop. 🙂 Tell me your concerns and we will have your back!

Does my baby need to be asleep in our neonatal portraits?

Your baby does not have to be asleep.

Whether your newborn is wide awake or sound asleep, that’s who he or she is at that moment. To me, that’s beautiful.

At your newborn session, we don't expect your baby to be asleep in every picture and we dont try to copy overdone trends or propping babies in non-natural positions. We want to show YOUR new little baby's unique personality, not the latest fad. (By the way, new babies aren’t actually able to prop their own heads up in their hands.)

Can I feed and change my baby in your studio?

Absolutely!

Our downtown Flagstaff portrait photography studio has it's own parking and all the comfort items you could need. We have a changing table with newborn diapers and wipes, burp cloths, drinks, snacks, even a Boppy pillow so you can feed your baby while you're here.

I feel awkward in front of the camera, can you help?

Yes! That’s our specialty. 🙂

During your portrait session, you’ll have a director to guide you, to tell you what to do with your hands. You don't need to be a model or an actor. We’ve got your back.

What is the turnaround time on my photos?

The finished artwork we'll create will be ready in 3-7 weeks from your View and Order Meeting, depending on what you order. That gives us time to loving Photoshop each image, to test print and be sure every portrait of your newborn is up to our meticulous standards.

How do I schedule my newborn photography session?

Start with that Schedule a Call button. We’ll have an informal conversation that will answer your questions and give you everything you need to get going with your newborn portraits.

What are KDI Photography’s business hours?

Monday through Friday from 9am - 5pm, by appointment.

We’re right across the street from Kickstand Kafe, with our own parking lot. 🙂

Do you have parking?

We sure do! The parking for our photography studio is on the Sullivan Street side of the building.
